Southfield Freeway Project Begins Next Week
DETROIT (WWJ) - Major traffic backups are expected on the Southfield freeway, beginning next Monday. MDOT's Rob Morosi says the freeway will be taken down to one lane in each direction between Ford Road and I-96.
Morosi tells WWJ crews will be replacing the freeway lights that date back to the 1960's.
"They're working, but the problem is that they age. You know, through various weather patterns, salt... rusting of some of the foundations, some of the bolts in the foundations. Things of that nature," he said.
"After 40-some odd years, we need to go in and not only replace the light poles, but also replaced the foundations, the conduit, the wiring. So, we're going to tie-up traffic for one year -- get all this renovation done," Morosi said.
That portion of the freeway will be down to one lane through October. In May, the Southfield will close completely between I-96 and the Lodge.
