Southfield Freeway Construction Starting
One of Metro Detroit's biggest road projects of 2011 is scheduled to start as early as this weekend.
WWJ's Ron Dewey reports that it seems like the road construction season is starting earlier and earlier with each passing year. Not even 10 days into the new year, and the very first stages of 2011's biggest project is set to begin along the Southfield freeway this weekend. It's part of an $80 million facelift, says MDOT's Rob Morosi.
"We're going to rehabilitate 24 bridges. We're going to do some pavement work up and down the corridor, on the freeway portion. What we wanna do is get everything done in one construction season," Morosi said.
Work is scheduled to begin this weekend on the bridges on 8 Mile Road; bridgework that can take place during the cold weather months. Other phases of the project along the Southfield freeway will see it shut down completely between I-96 and the Lodge, but that won't happen until June and last right through October.
