Southfield Freeway Closure Extends Further
WAYNE COUNTY (WWJ) - MDOT is closing down even more of the Southfield Freeway. Starting Wednesday, the freeway closure will extend further south into Dearborn and Allen Park.
"Between Ford Road and just south of 94... one direction will have two lane closures and the other direction will have a single lane closure, and that will flip-flop to get the work done," MDOT spokesman Rob Morosi said.
Road crews will be performing additional maintenance work to that section of the freeway.
"What we're going to do is just some simple maintenance. It's been 10 years, it needs to be done," Morosi said. "Some joint sealings so we prevent moisture from getting under the pavement, which can create potholes prematurely. We're going to do some maintenance on the overpasses, some steel repair, some spot painting, things of that nature to protect the bridges and get a longer life expectancy out of them."
Morosi said he feels drivers' pain, but the work will only last for about a month.
"I think anytime you put up orange barrels, signs or even close the shoulder, people get a little frustrated by it because they see, you know, obviously an extended period of time that they need to adjust to, but really, ultimately when you look at it, we're only going to be out there until the end of August. Just pack your patience, give us 30 days and then we'll just reopen that section to the south, wide open, and then in another month or so we'll open it to the north."
This upcoming work is part of the $80 million investment to reconstruct more than three miles of M-39 and make repairs to 24 overpasses in Wayne and Oakland counties.
