Snyder Sends Letter To H.P. Parents
HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. (WWJ) - While Highland Park School officials were making their case against the state sending in an emergency financial manager, Governor Rick Snyder sent parents a letter telling them why Lansing should be involved.
WWJ's Ron Dewey reports that in what's being called an unprecedented communication with parents of Highland Park School District students, the governor sent a letter to their homes, stating that without state intervention there would be no school district by the end of the month.
School board president Robert Davis says it was intended to scare parents, although the governor's office says it was intended to address the anger, fear and frustrations of parents.
In the letter, Snyder told parents the district's finances have reached the crisis stage, at $3 million dollars over budget. District officials say the letter could be taken as a warning for parents to get their kids out of their schools. It was the first time the governor has sent a letter to parents of a struggling school.
