Snyder Declares State Of Disaster In Upper Peninsula County
IRONWOOD, Mich. (AP) — Gov. Rick Snyder has declared a state of disaster for Gogebic County in Michigan's western Upper Peninsula after a tornado and flooding caused significant damage.
The governor made the declaration Friday, accompanied by an order activating the Michigan National Guard to assist response and recovery efforts. The moves stem from the severe storms that moved through the region late Monday and early Tuesday.
The storms and winds estimated at 90 mph caused severe damage to property and roads, including downed trees, power outages and flooding in many locations. The state says two bridges and 20 culverts remain impassible.
Roughly 40 National Guard members are expected arrive in the county this weekend and help clear debris and re-establish roadways.
A local state of emergency was declared Tuesday.
