Smoker Cited In Fire That Killed Him, Hurt Others
HAZEL PARK (WWJ/AP) - Authorities say a heavy smoker apparently caused a fire that killed him and sent three other residents of their suburban Detroit apartment complex to the hospital.
The fire broke out just before 7 a.m. Thursday at the three-floor Woodward Heights apartment complex in Hazel Park.
Fire Chief Ray DeWalt said the fire killed 64-year-old Dennis Mixen and sent three others to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. Other residents were treated at the scene.
DeWalt said Mixen was sitting in a reclining chair when the fire started.
