SMART Bus Driver Charged With Killing Pedestrian

TROY (WWJ) - A 42-year-old SMART bus driver has been charged in the death of a 37-year-old woman who was struck while crossing a street in Troy last fall.

James Maholmes, of Lathrup Village, was arraigned Thursday in 52-4 District Court on a charge of moving violation causing death. He pleaded not guilty and a personal bond was set at $5,000. He's due back in court on March 18.

Investigators say Sally LaMay, of Troy, was walking in a marked crosswalk on Maplelawn Drive around 11:30 p.m. Nov. 25 when she was fatally struck by the bus, which was turning onto Maplelawn from Crooks. The weather was clear at the time of the accident, traffic signals at the intersection were flashing yellow and street lights were working, police said.

Investigators say Maholmes was headed back to the bus terminal when the accident happened.
