Small Fire At Southfield City Hall

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - Southfield City Hall was evacuated after a small fire in the building, Friday afternoon. WWJ's Beth Fisher spoke with Southfield fire officials who said a light fixture caught on fire but it's been extinguished.

Standing out in front of the building were several girls who were there for a dance camp. Beth talked with one young witness, 13-year-old Shweta Pendia  from Sterling Heights.

"We were just sitting there, sitting there after lunch and stuff. We looked up, and all of a sudden, you know, there was a hole in this light fixture and there was like fire and all this ash and flaming stuff coming out. It was pretty freaky, and it got pretty big by the time we got out," she said.

"It wasn't, like, really scary. Just, it was like ... I guess, my first fire. So, it was one of those pictures that sticks in your head forever," Pendia said.

The dance campers were told they would have to wait until the smoke cleared before they would be allowed back in the building.

No one was hurt.  Everyone has since returned to their offices. An electrician was called to take a look at the lights.
