Sleeping Family Saved By Smoke Detectors As House Catches Fire
WEST BLOOMFIELD (WWJ) - Officials say a West Bloomfield family was able to escape to safety after a fire broke out at their home overnight as they were sleeping.
Firefighters responded to the home on Pontiac Trail around 4 a.m. Friday. Authorities say everyone in the house made it out safely -- thanks to smoke detectors that went off in the middle of the night.
Fire Capt. Dan Dawe said the blaze started in the attic and quickly spread throughout the 3,500-square-foot home, which is a total loss. The cause is currently under investigation.
WWJ's Bill Szumanski was over the scene in Chopper 950.
"This is one of those three-story, very large homes right on the lake. As a result of this house fire, they've had to shut down Pontiac Trail to allow the emergency crews in and out. Pontiac Trail is closed between Orchard Lake Road and Old Orchard Trail," he said.
It's unclear how long Pontiac Trail will remain closed.
West Bloomfield firefighters were assisted by fire departments from Waterford and Bloomfield Township.
