Skiers, Snowboarders Rejoice Over Recent Snowfall
DETROIT (WWJ) - The powdery snow may not be much fun to drive on, but there's a certain group of people who get butterflies in their stomaches every time the snow falls: Skiers and snowboarders.
Mickey MacWilliams, executive director of the Michigan Snowsports Industries Association, said warmer weather and little snow has affected some ski resorts.
"Southwest Michigan was really kind of hit the hardest as far as not being able to open some of the days with some of our ski areas down there. But, I'm staying optimistic about the rest of the season. We've got a nice base on our ski hills now," she said.
MacWilliams said ski resorts can make snow if Mother Nature doesn't cooperate.
"It does get warmer, but then, the snow does stay on the slopes especially when it's nice and packed like it is right now. Even when it gets warm , it's not like all the snow will melt off of our ski slopes," she said.
MacWilliams said things have been going well for skiing in southeast Michigan and northern Michigan for skiing and snowboarding, but said cross-country skiing has been better in Northern Michigan where they've had more snow.
"The cross-country trails are open up in northern Michigan now with some really beautiful conditions. So, you just have to head a little bit north and then you've got some pretty nice cross-country skiing," she said.
