AUDIO: Riley Skate Park, Farmington Hills, MI
Riley Skate Park is sprawling park on 8 Mile Road in Farmington Hills, Michigan, a few miles outside Detroit. It opened two years ago, a 29,000 square foot, all-concrete skate park that's free and open to the public - no forms or waivers to sign. It's open from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm during summer.
A mix of transitions ("tranny," in skate lingo) and "street," the park features bowls, ramps, ledges, mani-pads, and a so-called an "MLK Ledge," named for a famous skate spot at Martin Luther King High School in Miami. Detroit Public TV called it "one of the most impressive skate parks in the Midwest."
We talked to a few skaters who love the place, including Joe Terrell and his "thrasher" son, Tommy, whose friend Jake told us, "I like skating here because it's a sick skatepark."
