Silverdome Owner Pushing For Detroit Soccer Venue
DETROIT (AP) — The Silverdome's owner is proposing a $1 billion complex in Detroit that would include a new soccer stadium — part of an effort to bring an expansion Major League Soccer franchise to the city.
Steve Apostolopoulos, co-founder and managing partner of Triple Properties Inc., says the complex would include residential and retail space. It would be a short walk from Ford Field and Comerica Park, where the Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers play.
Triple Properties purchased the Silverdome in 2009. The Pontiac facility was the home of the Lions until 2002.
The city of Detroit is working through bankruptcy proceedings. Apostolopoulos says the project would not require any public money.
