Should Grosse Pointe Shores Switch Counties?
GROSSE POINTE SHORES (WWJ/AP) - Grosse Pointe Shores could decide to switch counties later this year.
A study finds it more advantageous for the village now straddling the Wayne/Macomb County line to adjust their boundaries to be totally part of Macomb County instead of Wayne County.
The update comes as a report by the committee studying the proposal found more advantages than disadvantages for the city in switching counties. The report presented Wednesday says Grosse Pointe Shores "receives virtually no direct services from the tax dollars" paid to Wayne County.
The issue was raised in part to escape higher Wayne County property taxes for lower Macomb County ones. Most of the city is in Wayne County, which includes Detroit, while part is in Macomb County.
Residents calling in to the WWJ Newsradio 950 newsroom on Thursday had a variety of viewpoints:
"If it lowers my expenses and brings more to my city I'd go for that."
"I think they're only squabbling about the money. I think the whole thing is taxes..."
"I think they want to desert Wayne County and desert Detroit and leave 'em."
City Council is set to take up the issue Aug. 21. Council members could decide to put the question before voters in November.
