Shorter Season, Greater Need As Red Kettle Campaign Rings For Salvation Army
DETROIT (WWJ) - Only a few weeks left for those Salvation Army red kettles to be out to accept donations. The goal for the campaign in southeast Michigan is $8.75 million, which Salvation Army Envoy Terry Gaster, says funds programs all year long.
"It's a little bit shorter, so we really are stepping up to promote our campaign this year because ... there's a little less time between Thanksgiving and Christmas."
Gaster says when you've got to raise millions - every donation counts:
"A ten-dollar donation will feed a homeless person for a month and one hundred and twenty dollars will feed that same person for a whole year," said Gaster.
He says the Salvation Army depends solely on donations from the public around the Christmas season.
"We hear that the economy's getting better and we hear that things are picking up, however the need is still there . Just in our facility alone, we expect to service for Christmas alone about 850 families, which boils down to about two thousand children just for Christmas."
