Shoppers Sympathize With Walmart Workers But Shop Anyway
DEARBORN (WWJ) - Walmart stores across the U.S. are bustling this Black Friday. And while the lines are long, tempers among some workers could be short.
Some employees are upset over working conditions, pay and health care and have threatened to walk out or slow down their pace to frustrate shoppers and get management's attention.
Laura Hammer of Garden City snapped up some great bargains and was not swayed by the plight of the Walmart workers: "I'm out to get my Christmas shopping done and I'm sorry they are not happy, but I'm fine," Hammer said. "I didn't like my career choice but after being in one field for 15 years, I went and got a Master's Degree and totally switched careers. If you don't want to work for Walmart, if you are not getting paid enough ... Target, K-Mart and Meijer are all hiring."
But Louis Norris of Detroit believes that the workers do deserve more.
"They ought to get it because they go through a lot ... it's a lot going on up there," Norris said.
While Norris supported the workers in theory, he came to shop at 6 a.m. and picked up an I-pad, i-pod, clothes, pajama sets, and store coupons.
