Near-Campus Shooting Prompts U-M Emergency Alert

ANN ARBOR (WWJ/AP) - Officials at the University of Michigan issued a campus-wide emergency alert following an attempted robbery of a cab driver near university-owned buildings east of Ann Arbor.

It happened around 8:30 a.m. Thursday when the driver of a cab said he was called to the area of Plymouth and Dixboro.

Washtenaw County Sheriff's Sgt. Jeff Fox said a man and women got into the taxi, began to argue with the cabbie about payment, and that's when the man pulled a gun.

"There was a scuffle between the cab driver and the suspect over the gun. The suspect was able to break free and the suspect and his female companion then fled on foot," Fox said.

The two were caught a short time later and taken into custody.

No one was hurt.

Spokeswoman Diane Brown said the text alert went out to students, staff and faculty Thursday morning after officials received reports of shots fired. The alert was cancelled when the pair was arrested.

She said no students were involved and the attempted robbery had no connection to the campus.

A number of colleges and universities are sending out emergency warnings via text messages and emails, primarily in response to recent shooting incidents on and near campuses.

Washtenaw County Sheriff's officials are investigating.
