Shooting At Southfield Police Station Injures Officer, Suspect Dies
SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - A 64-year-old man is dead after an exchange of gunfire with officers at the Southfield Police Department.
The incident happened Sunday afternoon when the man walked into the police station and started shooting. The desk officer ordered the man to drop the gun, but instead he pointed it at other officers who had entered the lobby. Those officers shot him multiple times.
Police Chief Eric Hawkins says the man gave no apparent reason for his actions when he walked up to the front desk and raised a weapon.
"He didn't say anything," Hawkins said. "The officers said he had a blank stare on his face. He appeared to be staring in the distance and did not say a word to the officer at all."
Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence says one of the bullets he fired hit a police officer in the shoulder.
"He's an outstanding officer ... many years of service here in the city of Southfield," said Lawrence.
The 50-year-old officer, who has 25 years on the force, is reported to be in stable condition and expected to recover.
The medical examiner confirms that the suspect, who has yet to be identified, is dead from bullet wounds.
