Sheriff's Department To Help Patrol Highland Park For Halloween Weekend
HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ) - Wayne County Sheriff Deputies will help patrol Highland Park streets during the upcoming Halloween weekend.
WWJ's Florence Walton reports the extra help is needed because of the city's street lighting problem.
"This period commences October 28th through October 31st. Our police, fire and civilian volunteers will partner with the Wayne County Sheriff's Department and implement a deployment plan that will ensure the safety of our city," said Highland Park Mayor Hubert Yopp.
Sheriff Benny Napoleon said his experience comes from helping to build the Angels' Night program in Detroit in the mid 1990's.
"Highland Park will be safe. I think that the additional challenges that we have with the lighting make it imperative that this agency, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, reaches out to the citizens of Highland Park to ensure that they are safe during this period, and we have done that," said Napoleon.
Mayor Yopp said the city is in the midst of upgrading the city lighting system. Recently, DTE Energy removed some street lights from Highland Park streets because of an outstanding balance. Read more, here.
