Sheriff: Volatile Materials Destroyed During FBI Raids
SUTTONS BAY (WWJ/AP) - A sheriff says hazardous materials were destroyed last week during a search of properties in northern Michigan's Leelanau County.
Sheriff Mike Borkovich declined to reveal the specific materials Friday, saying he must respect the FBI's investigation. He told The Associated Press that authorities went to a remote location to destroy what was deemed to be volatile or dangerous. The FBI won't comment.
Searches were conducted a week ago in Suttons Bay and in Leland Township. Agents also searched two homes in Houston and a condominium in Bryan, Texas. The properties in Michigan and Texas are owned in part by a Houston art appraiser.
FBI spokeswoman Shauna Dunlap said she could not comment on the case as search warrants related to the investigation remain sealed.
Borkovich said the route of a Suttons Bay homecoming parade was changed to avoid any conflict with the search.
Appraisal district records in Texas show the two Houston homes and the condominium in Bryan are owned either by Houston art appraiser Cecily E. Horton or by Horton and her husband, Andrew Schneck.
Leelanau County records show the home in Leland and the one in Suttons Bay are owned by the Cecilia Earhart Horton Trust. Records list the mailing addresses for the Michigan houses as Horton's homes in Houston.
