Sgt. Santa Gives Some Detroiters 'Best Christmas They've Ever Had'

DETROIT (WWJ) "It's our responsibility, we have an obligation to help those people who can't help themselves."

Those are the words WWJ Midday anchor Jackie Paige uses to describe the station's partnership with the Detroit Police Department, and the program the two conceived together: Sgt. Santa.

Throughout the holiday season, WWJ collects toys at various locations throughout metro Detroit. The Police Department, using their deep knowledge of the neighborhoods and the people in them, chooses recipients, looking for families on the right path and truly in need of holiday help. Chief James Craig takes an active role.

Then in one big swoop on the chosen day, police with lights and sirens blazing and WWJ staffers, including Paige and Vickie Thomas, head down the street toward the chosen families' houses. With fanfare, they troop down the sidewalk with armloads of toys in hand and give the families the happy surprise of their lives.

Sgt. Santa is there.

It reinforces the image of police officers as a crucial aspect of community aid and not just the people who show up to slap on handcuffs.

"The more toys, the more Christmases, the more holidays, the more smiles," said WWJ Sr. Managing Editor Rona Danziger.
