Severely Beaten Boy Fighting For Life At Children's Hospital

DETROIT (WWJ) - A two-year-old Macomb County boy is still fighting for his life, after what doctors are calling a severe case of shaken baby syndrome. WWJ's Kathryn Larson spoke to family members who've been keeping vigil at Children's Hospital.

Between tears it is difficult for Damien Sutton's aunt, Amber Gillespie to talk about her nephew with the bright blue eyes. "They are not - there is nothing more they can do -- they can't, the longer he stays sedated, the more damage that can happen, like they have to get him awake, they have to be able to see what he can do," said Gillespie. "I don't think they are going to be able to see anything."

Damian Sutton was listed in critical condition Friday morning at Children's Hospital in Detroit after police say he suffered terrible abuse at the hands of Ronald Dimambro.

The family says that the latest CT scan was black and showed less than 20 percent brain activity.

Doctors tell the family that it would take a miracle for 2-year-old Damien to do much more than breathe on his own, should he survive.

The family is preparing for the worst as doctors wean the toddler off medication.

Family members said at first, they thought the toddler had fallen out of a playpen at his Washington Township home on Tuesday — but they quickly became suspicious.

Dimambro was arraigned Friday in 42nd District Court in Romeo. He's being held on a $500,000 cash/surety bond.
