Services Held For Michigan Journalist Sam Logan
DETROIT (WWJ) - Family and friends of Michigan Chronicle Publisher Sam Logan paid their final respects to the journalism pioneer on Friday at Detroit's Greater Grace Temple.
Journalist Arvis Perry was among those remembering Logan. The two were neighbors at Detroit's Riverfront Apartments. He told WWJ Newsradio 950's Mike Campbell he knows what Logan would want his friends to do.
"Go forward in a positive way. As he said, he wanted people ... who worked for him to know just as much or more than he does," said Perry. "And he wanted everyone to have a chance to accomplish something -- make a difference."
New Detroit President and CEO Shirley Stancato talked about Logan's vision for his publication.
"He always said, you know, the Chronicle is not a black newspaper, it's a newspaper that brings everyone's information to the major community," said Stancato. "This is an enormous loss for our community."
Said Real Times Media chairman Larry Crawford, "His legacy is that he didn't see color. Sam was able to transcend color and speak to anybody. I mean, he could walk with kings and not lose the common touch."
The family is requesting that donations be made to Focus: HOPE, Hospice of Michigan, or Mariners' Inn in Detroit. Logan was 78. He will be laid to rest at Elmwood Cemetery.
