Semi Truck Plows Into Mound Road Party Store, 4 Injured

STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) - A lot of damage and multiple injuries were reported after a steel-hauling semi truck crashed into a Sterling Heights party store.

Witnesses at the scene told WWJ Newsradio 950 the semi was embedded 10 to 12 feet into Frank's Party Store & Delicatessen, on northbound Mound Road at 14 Mile, near the Warren border.

Sterling Heights Fire Chief Chris Martin said the truck driver was veering to try to avoid an accident when he lost control and went careening into the building.  He took out the side of store and the cab of the truck smashed in, trapping him inside.

Martin said the truck driver is very lucky to be alive.

"The guys did an excellent job cutting him out of the vehicle," Martin said. "Luckily, he's just got some minor injuries — but he was in there pretty good. It took them a little while to get him out."

The driver was taken to a local hospital, along with three other injured people — two who were in the store and one other driver. None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

As for the condition of the store: "It's got a lot of damage," Martin said. "We want to make sure one more time that there's not anybody else in the building, so we're structurally stabilizing the building so we can get back in there."

The 14 Mile and Mound intersection was shut down due to the accident and traffic was backed up along Mound to West Chicago Road. WWJ Traffic Reporter Randy Bhirdo suggests Ryan or Van Dyke, 15 Mile or 13 Mile as an alternate route.
