Semi Overturns On I-75, Completely Blocks Traffic
ROCKWOOD (WWJ) - Downriver drivers were forced to take a detour Friday morning, after a semi truck overturned on Northbound I-75 in Rockwood, completely blocking the freeway.
It appears the truck hit an exit divider and rode the wall before flipping on its side and sliding under the overpass at Woodruff Road.
Rockwood Fire Chief Dan Mercure said the accident happened in the early morning hours.
"The driver was going northbound on I-75, hit the extender here, drove up on the top, rolled over. It was carrying auto parts. We took the driver to the hospital and we're just trying to get the area cleaned up now and get this road opened up," Mercure told WWJ's Mike Campbell.
Police closed I-75 northbound from Fort Street to Gibraltar Road as emergency crews worked to clear the wreckage from the freeway. Crews worked for hours, unloading cargo into crates on the freeway, before wreckers were able to turn the truck upright.
The driver's condition is unknown.
