SEMCOG Seeks Public Opinion On Proposed Woodward Ave Rapid Bus System
DETROIT (WWJ) - Would you like to see a rapid bus system run the entire 27 mile length of Woodward Avenue from Pontiac to Detroit? If so, planners want to hear from you.
SEMCOG is looking for public comment during a series of meeting on a proposed rapid bus service along Woodward Avenue, reports WWJ Citybeat Reporter Vickie Thomas.
The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system would always have the 'green light' on Woodward Avenue according to the Director of Transportation Planning for SEMCOG Carmen Palumbo.
"We are talking about a bus system that will look like a light rail but operate more like a bus in the fact that it has rubber tires. It will make fewer stops, it will go faster, it would be given priority - the lights would always be green for the bus," said Palumbo.
"Once we have all this information from the people and the technical work we are going to bring this to the regional transit authority," he said.
If the proposal gets approval - voters would then have a say on funding operations of the system.
"One would be an increase in the vehicle registration fee that we pay, and the other option would be a millage," said Pulumbo.
