Security Program For Seniors
The Detroit Police Department has announced a program to help protect seniors from having their homes being broken into, following break-ins at the homes of two seniors this past weekend.
Police Detective Brian Fountain says through the free program, seniors can get free security surveys.
"Basically we come out to the house, we look at the doors, the locks, the windows, and we look at the house from different sides. We think like a burglar and we come up with what we call 'counter measures,'" said Fountain.
Some of the things they warn seniors about: utility guys.
"The three things we tell seniors to look for is that if the person has a uniform on, they should have a vehicle that matches that uniform, and they should have an ID card," said Fountain.
On Saturday afternoon, an intruder broke into the home of an 84-year-old woman on Lansing street near I-75. Once inside, the suspect beat the woman. She was listed in "temp-serious" condition.
A 90-year-old woman was raped on the city's west side late Thursday or early Friday by two suspects who forced their way inside her home.
