Security Guard Shoots, Kills Man At Senior Apartment Complex
DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police are investigating after a security guard shot and killed a man who tried to enter a senior citizen apartment complex near Wayne State University.
The shooting took place early Tuesday morning at the Freedom Place Apartments on West Warren Avenue, just across the Lodge Freeway from WSU's main campus.
The security guard apparently drew his weapon after a man tried to enter through the vestibule without showing any ID as required. No one else was injured.
Betty Branam, who lives in the complex, told WWJ's Mike Campbell that the victim appeared to be in his 60s, but she didn't recognize him as a fellow resident.
Branam said she and others pleaded with the security guard to quit because lately, it's been too dangerous.
"Oh, I feel so bad for him. We told him yesterday to leave this job, because he was too old and there's a lot of stuff going on around here," she said.
Branam said she's surprised more people aren't leaving the city because of the high crime rate, among other things.
"I think I'm going to move. My daughter wants me out of here, so I'm moving. When she hears about this, she's going to have a fit. I'm not going to call her and tell her this until later on, or she'd probably get me out of here today," she said.
Other residents, who did not want to be named, said their cries for help have gone unanswered.
"They need to get the chief of police out here, they need to do something about his area. It's bad over here, and they're lying if they say it's not," one woman said.
"I'm scared, I'm just scared. There's not enough protection," another woman said.
One day earlier, a young man was shot and killed in the parking just yards away from the complex.
