Seat Belt Problem Leads To Chevy Recall

General Motors is recalling more than 300,000 Chevrolet Impala sedans because the seat belts may fail to restrain people in the front seats during a crash.

"Vehicles with this condition may have an anchor that can separate in a crash, and therefore may not meet the anchor strength requirements of the U.S. and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard that covers seat belt assembly anchorages," GM said in a statement issued by the company.

The recall affects Impalas from the 2009 and 2010 model years.

General Motors says it doesn't know of any deaths or injuries that have occurred because of the problem. They've had nine cases of faulty seat belts repaired under warranty.

Dealers will inspect how the belts are anchored. The will reinstall the anchors if needed at no cost to the owners.

The recall notices are expected to go out before the end of the month.

Owners can contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438.
