Search For Missing Toddler Continues Through Sunday
DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police say they'll search through Sunday for missing 2-year-old Bianca Jones.
Friday morning, about 70 volunteer searchers got marching instructions at Metropolitan United Methodist Church in Detroit. They included 14-year-old Sidney Green.
"I just think about all the other kids that that could be, and I think about, I have a two-month old nephew, and I think what if that happened to him?" Green told WWJ Newsradio 950's Mike Campbell. "I would want somebody out here looking for him."
Al Hartland of Detroit was also there to help."I have two daughters myself, so I felt the need to do this," he said.
Hartland declined to say whether he believes the child is still alive.
The child's mother, Banika Jones, spoke with volunteers.
"You have my deepest heartfelt gratitude. And, those big words, they don't tell you how much I appreciate everyone helping me so much," she said.
Bianca's father, D'Andre Lane, told police that he was carjacked one week ago near Grand Boulevard and Brush Street with his daughter still in the car. The car was found nearby but Bianca was missing.
Friday's search area was expanded east of I-75. Searchers will be out until 5 p.m. or dark, whichever comes first. Another search from the church is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Terry Herbert with the Detroit Police Department's Community Services Unit said they've been averaging about 160 volunteers per day.
