Border Authorities Seek 4 Who Fled Agents
NEW BALTIMORE (WWJ) - A lockdown has been lifted for two northern Macomb County schools after authorities searched the area for at least four people who ran from Border Patrol agents.
Officials at the two schools, Anchor Bay North Middle School and Lighthouse Elementary, said the lockdown was lifted after agents told them there was no longer any threat or concern in the area.
School officials decided to issue the lockdown as a precautionary measure after they heard that the agents were searching for some suspected illegal aliens who were believed to be on the run.
An agent talking with WWJ Newsradio 950 said Border Patrol agents spotted a van traveling in New Baltimore around 8 a.m. Agents said the van stopped and the occupants, at least four people, fled. An extensive search of the area, including Border Patrol K-9 units and air support, turned up no sign of them.
Investigators are not sure why the people ran or who they are.
The suspects were still at large Thursday afternoon, but, according to a statement, Border Patrol believes there is "no danger to the public."
