School District To Pay $75K After Misconduct Allegation
MOUNT MORRIS TWP. (WWJ/AP) - A Flint-area school district has agreed to pay $75,000 in exchange for a former adult education student's promise not to sue over allegations of misconduct by a former school administrator.
The Flint Journal reported details of the agreement involving the Beecher Community School District following a Freedom of Information Act request. The agreement was made in August with a 21-year-old former student in the district's adult education center.
The student says he was sexually harassed by a male administrator after he began testing for his GED in 2012. The student apparently took the test multiple times but claimed he was unable to pass because of the alleged harassment.
According to the journal, the student's draft lawsuit said he had text messages and audio recordings of the administrator allegedly soliciting him for sex. The administrator also allegedly offered to pay for the student's GED testing in exchange for sexually explicit photographs, the journal reported.
Superintendent Josha L. Talison says the administrator is no longer employed by the school after his contract wasn't renewed in June.
The payout comes as the district works to cut $500,000 from its budget over the next two years because of an ongoing budget deficit.
