Saudi Traveler With Pressure Cooker Faces Charges
DETROIT (WWJ) - A detention hearing was set for Monday afternoon for a Saudi Arabian traveler who was arrested Saturday at Detroit Metro Airport with a pressure cooker.
Hussain Al Kwawahir was arraigned Sunday in federal court in Detroit charged with allegedly using an altered passport and lying to a Customs and Border Protection agent about the item.
According to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court, Al Khawahir arrived at Metro Airport on Friday from Saudi Arabia via Amersterdam. He had a visa and a Saudi Arabian passport, and told officers in the baggage control area that he would be visiting his nephew at the University of Toledo, the complaint said.
Officials said the device was found during baggage inspection.
A pressure cooker was a key component used in the Boston Marathon bombings last month.
A federal court officer said Monday's detention hearing would determine whether or not Al Kwawahir will get bond.
