Saturday Is 'National Youth Enrollment Day' For Health Insurance
DETROIT (WWJ) - The federal government is releasing new Obamacare enrollment numbers — and they're up.
Health and Human Services officials say enrollment in the Health Insurance Marketplace is growing every month with almost 3.3 million people locking in private coverage since the marketplace opened.
The department says young adult enrollment — those "Young Invincibles" — ages 18 to 34, grew by 65 percent in January. That's the biggest increase of any age group.
The administration wants to continue pushing that age group to sign up, so this Saturday is National Youth Enrollment Day.
Andy Hetzel with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan says people in that age group have an opportunity to get sign-up help in Ferndale this weekend. The event takes place Saturday, February 15 in Ferndale at the Rust Belt Market, 9 Mile and Woodward from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
"Young people need an extra effort, I think, by insurers and the broader community to get them to pay attention and get enrolled in health plans, "Hetzel said, "because, frankly, a lot of young people think they don't need health insurance."
"Young folks can come in, talk to experts, explore their options, talk about the value of owning a health insurance plan," he said.
The deadline for enrollment is March 31.
