Salvation Army Volunteers Prepare To Head To East Coast
DETROIT (WWJ) - Local Salvation Army workers could be sent to help with Hurricane Irene cleanup and relief work along the East Coast.
Speaking live on WWJ, the Salvation Army's Chuck McDougall said their workers are trained and ready, but seeing the damage first-hand would still be a shock."
"It's mind-boggling to see something like this. it seems we're getting hit with these things quite often now, and it's just hard to take it all in."
He said if they do get called in to help, there won't be any hesitation to leave. In fact, right now the local chapter has several teams of workers ready to go.
"As we speak, they've already got feeding units set up and shelters going. And once their people have been exhausted, then our people will come in and relieve them. The Salvation Army on the eastern Michigan side of the state, we have 12 canteens or mobile feeding units, that all have trained crews that can go out. So, basically we've got all our people who are notified and we contact them and find out who would be available to go help."
