Salvation Army Hosts Paint The City Red Day In Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit is turning red to help raise awareness during the final days of The Salvation Army's red kettle fundraising campaign. The red kettles will be located at 470 storefronts across metro Detroit through Christmas Eve.
The Salvation Army is hosting "Paint the City Red Day" on Wednesday in downtown Detroit at Campus Martius Park. Money donated will be used to buy gifts for less-fortunate area children.
Paint the City Red Day festivities include:
- A lunchtime celebration, sponsored by Quicken Loans, featuring ice skating, hot chocolate and cupcakes, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
- Music by The Salvation Army Brass Band from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Metal in the Kettle -- a zany bell-ringing competition for red kettle fundraising bragging rights, from noon to 1 p.m.
- Appearances by Detroit Tigers' mascot Paws and Detroit Lions' mascot Roary
"As the Red Kettle season draws to a close, we are encouraging metro Detroiters to help Paint the City Red in support of The Salvation Army's mission to give hope to neighbors in need," Major Mark Anderson, commander of The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit, said in a statement. "It's the compassion and generosity of our supporters that will help us reach our 2013 goal of $8.75 million."
