Salvation Army 2012 Red Kettle Campaign Raises Record Setting Total

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit announced that it raised $8,303,690.86 through its 2012 Red Kettle Campaign, the largest amount the nonprofit has raised through all previous annual campaigns. The 84 day campaign ran Nov. 9, 2012 through Jan. 31, 2013.

The Salvation Army also received in kind gifts of nearly $1 million during the recent holiday season, including winter coats, hats and mittens, toys, gas cards for seniors, canned goods and other food items.

Salvation Army Commander Major Mark Anderson said its the largest ever Red Kettle Campaign total.

"The hunger and homelessness in our community is tremendous and we took a real leap of faith in setting our $8.5 million goal. To surpass last year's contribution levels and end the campaign just shy of our 2012 goal is gratifying. It's been incredible to witness so many companies and residents respond with such generosity to ensure that we can provide the hand up our neighbors will need throughout the coming year," Anderson said in a statement.

A significant amount of money was collected by bell-ringers at red kettles stationed outside the storefronts of many retailers across the Detroit area throughout the holiday season, including grocery giants Walmart, Kroger and Sam's Club.

According to Governor Rick Snyder, The Salvation Army is the single largest social services provider outside of state government. Funds raised during the Red Kettle Campaign are the primary financial source for programming The Salvation Army provides. Services include meals, lodging, utility assistance, free legal aid, after school programs, youth programs, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, disaster aid and more, and serves all metro Detroit communities.
