Safety Concerns Put Some AT&T Workers On The Picket Line
SOUTHFIELD (WWJ)- A group of AT&T technicians say enough is enough, and are walking the picket lines over what they call a "life or death" issue.
WWJ's Marie Osborne reports that technicians from four AT&T locations walked off the job to protest what they say are unsafe conditions.
Communication's of America local president Greg Streby says they want managers to be available if help is needed.
"They are being robbed, you know, smash and grab equipment out of their trucks and we want the company to do something ... double them up," said Streby. "The techs today just said, you know what, it's my job or my life - so they decided not to go to work. And that's where we are at right now."
They say in the last week there have been 10 robberies, including one at gunpoint.
Management says the problem was being addressed but not fast enough for these men and women.
"If we identify an area where this has been going on, they will double up or send a manager - someone to cover the person's back," said Streby.
AT&T said in a statement that the safety of its workers is a top priority.
