Royal Oak Eyes $1-An-Hour Parking Rate
It may soon cost patrons in one Detroit suburb $1 an hour to park in prime spaces. But don't start squirreling away quarters just yet, because Royal Oak officials last week shelved the plan to review high-tech meters capable of accepting dollar bills, credit cards and cell phones.
Officials estimate the rate hike would generate $100,000 to $150,000 annually. Royal Oak currently charges between 50 cents and 75 cents for on-street parking in a high-use zones.
Greg Rassel, the city's public services director, tells The Daily Trubune of Royal Oak he thinks the rate will be increased in the next year, but doesn't think it will drive away customers.
Officials plan to test high-tech meters in November, December and January.
