Roope Hintz scores twice to lift the Dallas Stars over the Detroit Red Wings 5-4
There were plenty of giveaways as the Dallas Stars were beating the Detroit Red Wings 5-4 on Tuesday and Stars coach Peter DeBoer also felt there were bargains to be had.
"The people got their money's worth tonight, because it was like three games in one," DeBoer said. "Every period was a different story."
Roope Hintz scored twice as the Stars downed the Red Wings for the seventh game in a row (4-0-3). A game of twists and turns saw Detroit leading 2-1 after one period. Dallas outscored the Red Wings 4-0 in the second period. However, it was the Red Wings scoring both goals in the third period, falling just short in their bid to rally.
"I obviously loved our second period," DeBoer said.
Jamie Benn, Mason Marchment and Esa Lindell also scored for Dallas. Wyatt Johnston had three assists. Jake Oettinger made 30 saves in the Stars net.
David Perron, Alex DeBrincat, Dylan Larkin and J.T. Compher had goals for Detroit. Alex Lyon and James Reimer combined to stop 33 shots for the Red Wings.
Dallas opened the scoring just 3:24 into the game on a power play after Detroit was assessed a bench minor for too many men on the ice. Benn jammed a rebound past Lyon from the edge of his goal crease.
The Red Wings tied the score, also on a power play, at 14:33 of the first period.
Detroit was again on the power play when DeBrincat scored his team-leading 18th goal of the season to make it 2-1 at 16:53 of the opening period. Detroit went three-for-three with the man advantage on the night.
"It's tough to score three power-play goals and not win a game," DeBrincat said. "We've got to be better. It starts with the first shift of the second period. I lose my guy going to the net and it kind of snowballs from there."
Only 22 seconds into the second, Marchment converted Matt Duchene's feed to make it 2-2. Dallas claimed the lead for good at 4:35 of the middle period. Hintz swiped the puck from Red Wings forward Klim Kostin in front of the Detroit net and whipped a shot past Lyon.
Lindell drove a rebound past Lyon at 11:40 of the second period. Before the period ended, Hintz made it 5-2, zipping a high shot past Lyon for his 22nd goal of the season.
"I didn't think we had a good start, so we talked in the room that we needed to step it up a little bit," Hintz said. "I think we played well in the second period and we got the win."
In that fateful second period, Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde felt his team got away from the blueprint for success that they'd been employing of late.
"That was the difference in the game and probably a little credit to them," Lalonde said. "But it was on us. Some missed tracks, a couple of turnovers.
"Some of those things we've been kind of eliminating out of our game came back to us in the second against a team that's simply too good."
