Romney Bus Tour Includes June 20 Leg In Michigan
LANSING (WWJ/AP) - Presumptive presidential nominee Mitt Romney plans to visit Michigan as part of a six-state bus tour.
The Republican's in-state stop, which includes a visit to Troy, is scheduled for Wednesday, June 20. as part of the five-day tour called "Every Town Counts." It begins Friday in New Hampshire.
Jim Thienel, Chairman of the Oakland County Republican Party, says candidate Romney has a chance to get more people to the polls than John McCain did back in 2008.
"We expect to pull somewhere between 100 and 115,000 more votes than McCain scored in 2008. We think that's going to be enough to carry the state," Thienel said.
"I think he (Romney) realizes that Oakland County is going to be key to his election chances," said Thienel. "If we carry Oakland County signifficantly, and I think we will, it makes it quite likely that we are going to carry the state.
"If we carry the state, Obama is going to be looking to find another job," he said.
Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin and Iowa also are on the tour. Romney will be arguing that President Barack Obama has paid little attention to the everyday concerns of the American people and highlighting what he calls the "boundless optimism" that small-town families display despite their struggles with job losses and foreclosures.
Romney campaigned last month in Michigan. He grew up in southeast Michigan, the son of former auto executive and Gov. George Romney.
The campaign said Monday that more details of Romney's campaign stops will be announced soon.
