Roll Over Accident Held Up Traffic On M-53
STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) - A roll over accident caused a major traffic jam along M-53 Van Dyke Freeway in Sterling Heights Wednesday morning.
WWJ Traffic Reporter John Bailey reported around 8 a.m. that a car flipped over near the roundabout at 18-1/2 Mile Road. The accident caused a multi-mile backup on M-53 for over two hours, as crews cleared the wreck from the road.
WWJ's Bill Szumanski was hovering over the accident in Chopper 950.
"It's a full-sized, Jeep-type vehicle laying on its side, but the door is in one place and the roof is in another. They had to take a chainsaw to cut the occupant or occupants of this vehicle completely out. M-53 southbound remains closed between the roundabout and 18 mile road as they now get wreckers hooked up to this vehicle to get everything out-of-the-way," he said.
The driver of the vehicle was transported to a local hospital.
Police aren't saying if anyone else was injured in the crash and have not yet released details about the driver.
