Ride For Autism This Saturday
SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - Hundreds of Metro Detroit bikers are gearing up for a big ride this weekend, raising money and awareness for families living with autism.
It started out as a fundraiser to help one family affected by autism.
"There was a friend at work who had an autistic son and we decided to do something for them," said organizer Sal Ferra.
He expects more than 250 bikes will be part of the 9th Annual Ride for Autism, helping thousands of families with children diagnosed on the autism spectrum.
"I get a lot of enjoyment out of that we are helping autistic children," Feera said.
Volunteer Angie Gimik, who also has child with autism, says, if you think hundreds of big burly bikers and kids on the spectrum make a strange combination, think again.
"They're really big, loving teddy bears. They are willing to do anything and everything for my son, let alone everybody else's children," she said.
Ride for Autism kicks off the morning of Saturday, Aug. 4, from Southfield and Brighton; and ends with a big family-friendly party at Biker Bob's in Taylor. You don't have to be a biker to be there.
Proceeds from Ride for Autism support programs at the Macomb-Saint Clair County Autism Society and the Judson Center.
