Rich Rod Avoids NCAA Sanctions
The University of Michigan has learned its punishment for violating NCAA rules in its football program. The NCAA has added a third year of probation to the program for rules violations related to practice and training time.
The NCAA also ordered coach Rich Rodriguez to attend a rules seminar but otherwise said the school had punished itself appropriately for the problems that cropped up last year.
Michigan already accepted responsibility for four allegations and imposed its own penalties on the football program. The school also reprimanded seven people, including Rodriguez. But
U of M challenged one allegation--that Rodriguez failed to "promote an atmosphere of compliance" with NCAA rules.
Rodriguez is in the third year of a four-year contract. The Wolverines have lost their last three games after starting the season 5-0. They play Illinois in Ann Arbor Saturday.
