Reward Offered In WSU Football Player's Death
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Authorities are seeking the public's help in identifying suspects in the shooting death of a 20-year-old Wayne State University football player outside a downtown Detroit nightclub.
Crime Stoppers of Michigan and city homicide investigators said a $2,500 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
Courtney "Cortez" Smith was shot twice during an argument between two groups of men about 11:30 p.m. on May 5 in the club's parking lot at Larned and Shelby streets. A 25-year-old man was wounded.
Robbie Smith said his son was helping a friend.
Smith was a junior at Wayne State and majored in criminal justice. He played cornerback for the football team and was the Warriors defensive rookie of the year in 2010. He was a 2008 graduate of Cass Tech, where he was also an all-city and all-metro
football player.
