Reward Doubles In Rosa Parks Apartment Copper Theft Case
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP/WWJ) - People attending a community gathering in Montgomery, Alabama over the weekend contributed to a reward fund, doubling the amount offered for information about thefts at Rosa Parks' former apartment which was stripped for copper scrap.
The Montgomery Advertiser reported that the reward fund is now at $2,000.
CrimeStoppers Regional Director Tony Garrett said everyone who attended the "Big Blue Event" on Monday was asked to contribute a dollar to the reward fund, which had been $1,000. The Big Blue Event is an outgrowth of monthly community gatherings in and around Montgomery.
The thefts last month heavily damaged the Montgomery apartment complex where Parks lived during the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955 and 1956 when she famously refused to give up her seat to a white person on a city bus.
Parks later lived in Detroit and died in 2005 at age 92.
Several copper items were stolen during the robbery at the complex currently is undergoing a multimillion-dollar renovation. Parks' apartment has been maintained as a mini-museum; artifacts on display were slightly damaged by the thieves.
No arrests have been made.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call Central Alabama CrimeStoppers at 334-215-STOP.
