Review: Training Should Be Re-Emphasized After Teen's Death By Police
CHARLOTTE (WWJ/AP) - An internal review of the fatal shooting of an unarmed teenager by an Eaton County Sheriff's deputy after a traffic stop says training of officers needs to be emphasized.
The county prosecutor earlier said the deputy wouldn't be charged after reviewing a state police investigation of the shooting. The internal investigation found Sgt. Jonathan Frost followed department "regulations, general orders and training."
It also recommend the department "re-emphasize" training on stun gun use and continue to place an emphasis during training on communication and "defensive ground fighting tactics."
Frost shot 17-year-old Deven Guilford of Mulliken seven times Feb. 28 in Roxand Township.
Guilford was stopped for flashing his bright lights at the deputy and refused to provide his identification. They began to struggle when Frost tried to pull Guilford from his vehicle. Guilford was reportedly on top of Frost when the deputy fired his weapon.
