Retiring Detroit FBI Head To Lead Crime Commission
DETROIT (WWJ) - The head of the FBI in Detroit is leaving his job to work for the Detroit Crime Commission.
Andrew Arena will join the non-profit group, formed last year, which acts as a liaison between the public and law enforcement.
Talking to WWJ Newsradio 950, Arena explained why he's retiring his position as Special Agent in Charge for the FBI Detroit Division.
"I've been doing this for 24 years and I've been here for five so, you know, it's pretty clear that I'm not going to be able to stay here much longer," Arena said. "Detroit's my home and, quite frankly, I don't want to move my family or leave them here ... So, from that standpoint it's time."
Arena talked also about what he'll be doing in his new job.
"The Crime Commission is really gonna focus on quality of life issues in Southeast Michigan," Arena said. "We're going to look for gaps in law enforcement where we can best fit in."
"It could be investigating criminal enterprises, looking at public corruption, it could be training," he said.
Arena has worked for the FBI in Washington, New York, Los Angeles and Ohio. The Detroit bureau has worked several high-profile corruption investigations including that of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.
