Retired Volunteer Fire Chief Loses Home To Fire

LYON TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - A beloved retired metro Detroit fire chief found himself without a home following a devastating fire over the weekend. Now, the community he served for decades is lending a helping hand.

For more than 40 years — 30 as chief — Les Cash of Lyon Township would answer in the middle of the night to put out fires.

All as a volunteer.

"He's just a great guy. He was always on every call; just did a lot for the community," said New Hudson Ron Lopez, who worked with Cash.

Lopez and his wife are working to raise money to honor and support the 70-year-old retired chief, who is now in hospice care.

"After hearing that his house caught on fire on Saturday ... We just felt compelled to do a fundraiser for him, because he shouldn't have anything else on his plate to deal with," Lopez said.

"He was just a very happy, willing to help anybody in need kinda guy — the perfect guy for a fire chief," said Lopez. "And for him to be in this situation, I think it would be best for the community to show their support and love for him, like he always did for Lyon Township."
