Residents Displaced After Burst Pipe Floods Detroit Apartment Complex
DETROIT (WWJ) - Dozens of residents at an apartment complex in Detroit received a rude awakening overnight when pipes burst on the upper floors, sending water cascading into their homes below.
WWJ's Ron Dewey reports the incident happened at The Grand Lofts on West Grand Boulevard, near Michigan Avenue.
Residents say the pipes burst in the middle of the night, the results of which made it look like it raining on the inside of the building. Sancho Gist was able to capture video on the flooding.
"It looks like its raining, it still is. Can you see that, all this water? It's ridiculous," said Gist, who was able to capture video of the flooding on his cell phone.
Another resident, who didn't want to be named, said he was getting ready for work when water came crashing down through his ceiling.
"All the tenants were coming out and they were pretty mad. They were soaking wet and they were cold, they were just upset and mad about the situation," he said.
Some residents spent the night at a hotel or with relatives, but others actually slept in their cars overnight after their apartments were flooded.
Officials haven't yet determined an exact cause, but the cold weather -- with temperatures down to a single digit -- is thought to have played a role in the incident.
