Body Recovered After Mobile Home Fire In Canton
CANTON (WWJ) - Authorities have recovered a woman's body from a mobile home in Canton that was destroyed by fire.
The fire took off early Wednesday morning at an older model, single-wide trailer in the Wagon Wheel Mobile Home Park on Mott Road, in a fairly rural area between Michigan Avenue and Geddes Road.
Fire Chief Joshua Meier said it's not yet clear if the body belongs to the homeowner.
"There is one person that lives at the home here and it's undetermined at this point whether they were home at the time of the fire or not; we were unable to confirm that," Meier told WWJ's Mike Campbell. "Our police department is here, they are tracking down leads in an attempt to locate the person."
Meier also said it's too early to determine if the victim was killed in the fire or if some other factors are at play.
"At this point, we've secured the scene and we've got our fire investigation team responding, along with our police department's detective bureau, and we're going to do an investigation to not only determine the cause and origin of the fire but also try to determine who the victim is," he said.
Others think foul play might be involved. Neighbors said a man lived alone in the burned trailer, and he's apparently been in the hospital receiving treatment.
"I don't suspect any foul play but until we do our investigation, we're not going to know those answers for sure," said Meier.
Kimberly Batter, who lives across the street, was among those in the neighborhood awakened by the early morning fire.
"My stepson seen it start. He said the kitchen was like a big ball of fire and then he said he came out of the porch and the flames were so hot he was staying warm," she said.
An investigation is ongoing.
